The Voxel's artist residency offers you 24/7 access to a black box theater in the heart of Baltimore City. The residency is an opportunity to use our space and equipment to produce a live show in front of an audience.
Residences for 2026 will be during the summer months, giving each artist or company one to two weeks in the space. This timeframe includes scenic/props/costume load-in, rehearsal, a week of tech, and a weekend of performances.
The Voxel team was actively engaged and supportive — we checked in with each other regularly and in conversation we grew the project into something more than originally proposed. The Voxel team gave excellent support building, presenting and documenting the project. There is nothing like this opportunity in this city or this region.
— Jeff Carey, composer and musician
Working at The Voxel is an unparalleled experience of freedom and support. They really do just want your project to succeed and will work very hard to make sure that it does!
— Lola Pierson, playwright and director
The Voxel’s Amenities Include
The Voxel is an ADA accessible theater comprising a 2,200 square foot black box stage, a 1,900 square foot lobby, and 3,000 square feet of production and support spaces. A pipe grid is installed over the majority of the building, so the space can be reconfigured to suit by using curtains.
The lobby is just as flexible as the stage and may be re-envisioned for many purposes.
The green room has a kitchenette, 2 dressing rooms, lounge area, and an ADA accessible shower and restroom.
All residencies are provided:
A rep lighting plot (with the ability to add specials), minimizing time spent hanging lights.
A house speaker system already in place—just bring a sound designer or audio engineer.
Pre-hung projectors, saving time for your projection designer.
A curated blackbox stage and audience layout, optimized to serve all residencies efficiently and reduce time spent on audience seating setup.
Front of house and lobby management handled entirely by The Voxel staff.
Resident artists use our space for free. If you choose to sell tickets, we do not take a cut of your sales.
24/7 access to The Voxel during your residency dates.
10 hours of technical support for load-in and strike.
Support for coordinating the residency and performances.
Promotion via our website, newsletter, and social media.
Branded posters in the poster bays outside our building.
Professional photographic documentation of public events.

Selection Criteria
We will be using a rubric to evaluate all applications in order to ensure a fair, thoughtful, and consistent review process. Each application will be scored across several key criteria using a 0–5 scale, outlined below. This approach allows us to assess both the feasibility and artistic strength of each proposal, and to make decisions equitably.
Does the applicant have a clear and feasible plan of how to execute their project?
Does the applicant have a plan for funding this project?
Does the applicant have a production team or necessary personnel to bring their art to life?
Does the applicant have a clear vision of the art they are trying to produce?
Does their project include a public performance?
Is the project artistically interesting?
Does the project uplift and/or represent marginalized groups?
Selection Process
The Voxel staff will review applications and interview finalists. We'll email you by October 15, 2025 to tell you whether your project was selected.
